Abstract: The Andrew Jackson Greene Collection consists of 163 diaries written by Greene and describing Watauga County's education system, cultural and religious life, and agriculture from 1906 to 1942.
Materials include 163 notebook diaries of varying sizes, six ledgers recording Appalachian State Teachers College meeting notes, Silas Greene's 1909 diary and typed transcriptions of A.J. Greene's records and diaries. The papers are arranged into four series: Series I. Diaries (1906-1942), Series II. Silas Greene (1909-1910), Series III. Appalachian State Teachers College Records (1915-1940), and Series IV. Transcriptions (circa 1995-1997).

Acquisitions Information

The family of Andrew Jackson Greene deeded the main body of papers to the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection. In May 2000, Ben Miller of Boone, North Carolina donated an additional floppy disk labeled "WordPerfect Files" which was placed in the Transcribed Series, received from John W. and Susan M. Gill of Spotsylvania, Virginia.

Biographical Note

Andrew Jackson Greene (1883-August 12, 1942) was a life-long resident of Watauga County, North Carolina and instructor in several Watauga schools including Appalachian State Teachers College. Greene worked as farmer, public school teacher, college professor. Greene was an enthusiastic diarist maintaining regular entries from 1906 to the day before his death. He also recorded A.S.T.C. faculty meetings from January 9, 1915 to May 3, 1940. He married Polly Warren and they had three children, Ralph, Maxie, and Lester.
