James Farmer Collett (1904-1939) was a stone mason from Jacks Creek in Leslie County, Kentucky.
This collection contains five recordings of James Collett singing folksongs in Middle Fork, Kentucky. The recordings were made by Alan and Elizabeth Lomax of the Archive of American Folk Song at the Library of Congress in September 1937. Original recordings include nine songs on 12-inch 78 rpm sound discs. Most songs are traditional except for "Jackson County Jail House Blues." Recordings document Collett singing and playing a guitar, or accompanying a banjo played by John Brook. An audio cassette user copy is available of the sound discs, but because the discs were not cleaned or treated before it was made, the copy is of very poor quality and static is the predominate audible sound.
Digitized index cards to James Collett's recordings are available from the American Memory Project at the Library of Congress, including song title, alternate title(s), singer(s), performer(s), recordist(s), recording location and date, format, subjects, and instruments.
