Title: Watauga County Historical Site Survey Records, 1880 - 1991(1987-1989 bulk)
Language of Material: Material in English
Location: For current information on the location of these materials, please consult Appalachian State University.
Abstract: The Watauga County, North Carolina Historical Site Project was a Watauga County architectural study of older houses, churches, stores, barns and schools conducted by students and volunteers. Between 1988 and 1990, workers surveyed Watauga County's architecture to record buildings of historic and architectural significance. Most buildings were identified by current or historically significant owners. Standard entries contain a completed inventory form and several photograph proofs of the building's interior and exterior. The Watauga County maps which the surveyors used are also available.
The Watauga County, North Carolina Historical Site Records are divided into three series: Series 112A. Project Materials, Series 112B. Historical Sites Files and Series 112C. Maps. Documents measuring over 8" x 14" and the entire Maps Series are stored separately in oversized folders, measuring 31" x 23". These three folders are located in Appalachian Collection Oversize Box 1. An addendum includes the 2003 North Carolina State Historic Preservation grant for Watauga County, North Carolina historic sites. Seven boxes of photographs of houses, outbuildings, interior details, churches, and an outdoor baptismal pool are included. Photographs are not indexed.
Extent: 5.5 linear feet, 15 archival boxes

Historical Note

The historical site inventory was coordinated by Dr. Carl A. Ross, former president of the Watauga County Historical Society and director of the Center of Appalachian Studies at Appalachian State University. The Historic Preservation Fund of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources guided and funded this project. Appalachian Studies graduate students Deborah Thompson and Elizabeth Stevens conducted much of the research with the assistance of several volunteers.

Deborah Thompson published Watauga County Historic Architecture Survey: Blowing Rock, 1988-1989 in Watauga County Times ... pastas a result of this work.
