<head>Biographical Note</head>

<bioghist><p>The Southern Appalachian Historical Association (SAHA) is a non-profit organization based in Boone, North Carolina. It organized in 1951 to operate the annual production of Kermit Hunter's outdoor drama "Horn in the West." SAHA is dedicated to the preservation of the cultural heritage of the Southern Appalachian region through annual productions of "Horn in the West," an outdoor American Revolutionary War drama, the annual Apple Festival, the Hickory Ridge Homestead Museum, an eighteenth-century living history museum, and the Powderhorn Theater.  </p>

<p>The Horn in the West grounds include the Daniel Boone Amphitheater, Powderhorn Theater, Daniel Boone Gardens, and Hickory Ridge Homestead. The <emph render="bold">Daniel Boone Amphitheater</emph> was built in 1952 in three months and was designed by John Lippard and four students from North Carolina State University's School of Design. It seats 2,500 and serves outdoor theatre performances, but was designed specifically for "Horn in the West" and its scenery and backdrop requirements. <emph render="bold">Powderhorn Theater</emph> is a smaller indoor laboratory theater originally designed to provide "Horn in the West" cast members a stage to expand their skills in other dramatic areas. It can seat 75 patrons and is used for other drama performances throughout the summer by "Horn" cast members. <emph render="bold">Hickory Ridge Homestead</emph> is a living history museum designed to display daily life in the eighteenth century during the settlement period (1785-1805). It was founded in 1980 and, in addition to period cabins, includes live demonstrations and workshops in weaving, candle making, hearth cooking, and arts and crafts. <emph render="bold">Daniel Boone Native Gardens</emph> was founded in the mid-1970s and preserves natural plant life of the area. They display native flora of the region and landscaping.

<p><emph render="bold">Kermit Hunter</emph>  (October 3, 1910 - April 11, 2001), the author of "Horn in the West," "Unto These Hills," and forty other historical productions, was born in West Virginia, the son of Otis John and Lillian Farley Hunter. He studied at Ohio State University (undergraduate), Julliard School of Music, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he wrote "Unto these Hills" as his M.A. thesis in 1949 and later completed his Ph. D. in 1955. Hunter received an award for distinguished contributions to American music from the National Federation of Music Clubs and has worked as a professor at Hollins College (Roanoke, Virginia) and Southern Methodist University (Dallas, Texas).</p>

<p>Series A, SAHA Administrative Records, 1950 - 2004, contains organizational and internal records, such as Association meeting minutes, correspondence, agendas, memberships, contracts, and financial records. Subseries I, General, contains executive and committee meeting minutes, reports, and other administrative materials. Subseries II, Correspondence, contains internal and external letters and memos (See also Series B, Subseries II, Horn in the West Correspondence and Series B, Subseries III, Support Organizations). Memos and letters regarding cast members' performance and drug use are restricted from use. Subseries III, Financial Records, includes materials relating to budgets, audits, salaries, IRS, grant applications, audit reports, salary information, financial reports, revenue laws, loans, outstanding bonds, donations, loans, and nightly deposits. Grants include applications, correspondence, and working papers (see also Series B, Subseries III: Theater Arts of North Carolina and Series A, Subseries I: Meeting Minutes). Subseries IV, Membership, contains membership lists, cards, and applications. Subseries V, Contracts, contains contracts between Southern Appalachian Historical Association and vendors, employees, and institutions. Subseries VI, Employee Information, includes information on apprenticeships auditions, letters of intent, resumes and applications, and workman's compensation and insurance forms. Subseries VII, Miscellaneous, consists of photocopied newspaper articles regarding Southern Appalachian Historical Association and its organizations, various SAHA social functions, a typed copy of Constance Stallings' Journal from 1950-1952 concerning the founding of SAHA and the play "Horn in the West," and SAHA news clippings from 1986-1987 and 2003.

<p>Series B, "Horn in the West" (Production), 1951 - 2004, contains materials concerning dramatic productions of Kermit Hunter's "Horn in the West," the individual productions, casts, scripts, advertising, and related materials. Subseries I, Administrative, includes administrative files, copyright documents, production reports, statistics, and surveys. Subseries II, Correspondence, includes correspondence, memos, and letterheads. Subseries III, Related Organizations, includes correspondence, documents, and materials of other organizations connected to Horn in the West, such as acting groups, outdoor drama organizations, sponsors, and historical societies. It also includes grant applications from the North Carolina Theatre Board. Subseries IV, Public Relations, includes advertising materials, press releases, brochures for Horn in the West, and advertising notes. Subseries V, Souvenir Programs, includes official programs from 1952 to 2000 (except 1959). Subseries VI, Scripts and Scores, includes official scripts, drafts, and revisions of "Horn in the West" scripts and sheet music from 1952 to 1998. Subseries VII, Cast, contains cast, understudy sheets, alumni lists, a cast petition, and cast directories. Subseries VIII, Production Materials, includes inventories of Horn in the West props and Production Books materials. It contains production reports and books used by stage managers and other theater personnel during productions. They include the scripts and scene-by-scene stage layout, musical scores, nightly reports and statistics, replacement and understudy information, cast lists, and daily performance sheets. Subseries IX, Newspaper Clippings, contains photocopies of newspaper articles relating to "Horn in the West" between 1951 and 2004.

<p>Series C, Daniel Boone and Powderhorn Theaters, 1984 - 1997, contains information relating to non-"Horn in the West" productions sponsored by SAHA and related production organizations. It consists of scripts, programs, publicity material, fliers, posters of the Powderhorn and Daniel Boone Theater programs, and Daniel Boone Theater for Youth productions.
</p><p>Series D, Hickory Ridge Homestead, 1964 - 2001, includes materials relevant to the Hickory Ridge Museum. It consists of correspondence, budgets, appraisal and accessions materials, advertising, reports, Apple Festival materials, historical information, including the Tatum family background, and summer camps and tours for children and youth.

<p>Series E, Appalachian Research Material, 1943 - 2001, includes general research and reference materials on the history of the Appalachian region. Subseries I, Appalachian Historical Research, includes photocopied articles on artifacts for theater props, food, and settlements. There is a 1958 edition of William Tompkins' Universal American Indian Sign Language, pamphlets on Watauga County, NC, history of the town of Boone, and materials relating to the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection, as well as Appalachian writers. Subseries II, Daniel Boone Research, includes correspondence and research into Daniel Boone and his descendants, and a Daniel Boone Coloring Book, circa 1952-1953. Subseries III, Regional Trails and Parks, concerns related recreational areas, such as the Daniel Boone Native Gardens, the Daniel Boone Trail, the Boone Greenway, the Overmountain Trail, and the Buffalo Trail. The Daniel Boone Native Gardens folder contains correspondence from the North Carolina Garden Club relating to the creation of the gardens and native plant life.</p>
<p>Series F, Audiovisual Materials, 1963 - 2000, contains nontexual material, including photographs, audio and video recordings. Subseries I, Audio, includes reel-to-reel and cassette recordings of "Horn in the West," narration, advertisements, interviews, and music recordings. There is also a minidisk and two copies of sound disk recording of actor Charles C. Elledge reading "Twas the Night Before Christmas." Subseries II, Video, includes five VHS tape recordings of Sister Mary Ignatius Explains, Legend of Pocahontas, Daniel Boone for Youth production of "Mountain Dreamin'," and "Horn in the West" public service announcements. There are two 2-inch magnetic tape film transfers of Phoenix Production's film of "Horn in the West," 1986, and one copy on 16 mm color film. Audio and video material requires the creation of user copies before being available for research. User copies are created on an as-needed basis.</p>
<p>Series F, Subseries III, Photographs, include photographs and slides of cast members, "Horn in the West" and other productions, Hickory Ridge Homestead buildings, construction of the Daniel Boone Amphitheater, photographs used in the "Horn in the West" programs, Daniel Boone Native Gardens, craft fairs, apple festivals, and other local events. There are approximately 1,200 color slides. Color slides and photographs are located in cold storage and require advanced notice to view. </p>
<p>Series F, Subseries IV, Artifacts, contains non-textual three-dimensional objects. It consists of a Horn in the West Seat Pillow, inscribed "Horn in the West, Boone, N.C."</p>
<p>Series G, Oversize Materials, 1952 - 2001, contains materials separated from Series A-E, including blueprints of Daniel Boone Amphitheater's stage and props, campus maps of University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, "Horn in the West" posters and paintings, regional ephemera, broadsides and fliers for Powderhorn and Daniel Boone Theater productions, newsletters, magazines, and blueprints of the Daniel Boone Native Gardens. Oversize items are organized by size and are itemized in the container list.
