Abstract: The Howard Dorgan Papers consists of a collection of documents generated during Dorgan's career as a Communications professor at Appalachian State University. His scholarly emphasis has been traditional Appalachian mountain religions, particularly Old Regular Baptists and Primitive Baptist Universalists. Documents generated while he was in leadership in the Appalachian Studies Association and materials regarding each of Dorgan's University of Tennessee Press publications and a few journal publications are also included.
The Baptist Association programs are fairly comprehensive for associations from the Kentucky, southwestern Virginia and northwestern North Carolina. One program dates from 1879. Other Baptist materials include photocopied record books, other papers and photographs. Appalachian Studies Association records include yearly programs and treasurer's reports.

An appointment for research is required. The Baptist Association Program Subseries and Appalachian Studies Association Series are open to researchers; however, other sections in this collection are closed to the public. No Inter-Library Loan. Photographs are housed separately within a cold storage unit. Please allow additional time to allow the photograph to adjust to room temperature.

Acquisitions Information

On 17 August 2000, Dorgan donated two file folders regarding the creation of the Center for Appalachian Studies and the Appalachian Studies Association. On 21 May 2001, Dorgan donated correspondence on his publications. On 30 July 2001, Dorgan donated audio-visual materials and additional documents. On 14 August 2002, Dorgan donated additional Baptist Association proceedings. On 15 May 2003, Dorgan donated additional materials about the Appalachian Studies Association. On 28 July 2004, Dorgan donated additional materials about the Appalachian Studies Association. The Baptist Association Programs Subseries was opened to the public on 22 October 2002. The AudioVisual Subseries was opened to the public on 3 June 2003. The Appalachian Studies Association Series was opened to the public on 2 June 2003.

Biographical Note

Claude Howard Dorgan was born in 1932 in Louisiana. He received his bachelor of arts from the University of Texas at El Paso, his masters of fine arts from University of Texas at Austin, and his doctorate from Louisiana State University. He and his wife Kathy have two children, Shawn and Kelly. Dorgan began working at Appalachian State University in 1971. He has served as the president and executive secretary of the Southern States Communication Association, president of the Carolinas Speech Communication Association, editor of the Southern Communication Journal, and president-elect of the Appalachian Studies Association. He is a past President of the Appalachian Studies Association and an Editorial Board Member for the Journal of Appalachian Studies. Dorgan's books include Giving Glory to God in Appalachia (1987), The Old Regular Baptist in Central Appalachia (1989), The Airwaves of Zion (1993), and In the Hands of a Happy God, (1997). He won the Thomas Wolfe Literary Award in 1993. Dorgan retired from Appalachian State University in 2001 and remained active in local politics and the Appalachian Studies Association post-retirement.

Series Description

Series 116A. Baptist Research Materials. (1792-2000)
The Baptist Association Programs Subseries contains original and photocopied programs from various Baptist Association Meetings, chronologically in alphabetical arrangement. Included Baptist associations are primarily located in Central Appalachia but some are also in Georgia, Indiana, Missouri, North Carolina (Appalachian and non-Appalachian), and Ohio. Sub-denominations are Freewill Baptist, Old Regular Baptist, Primitive Baptist, Separate Baptist, and Union Baptist. Programs include programed events for yearly association, church statistics, names of delegates, preachers, elders, the association's tenets. Many also include obituaries and photographs. Additional donations are added in boxes 15 through 16.

The Audio-Visual Materials Series include three-quarter video, VHS tapes, and DVD versions of recordings. Recordings are of northwest North Carolina church services, preachers speaking, and preachers interviewing. Dorgan recorded these films in the mid-1970s as part of his research in Appalachian religious practices.
