Historical Note

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) was the most important New Deal agency for the Appalachian Region. Established in 1933, the TVA provided electricity to the rural Tennessee Valley through the flooding of the nation's fifth largest river, the Tennessee River, through the construction of eight dams. This government funded projected cost $300 million. As a result, electricity within the TVA region increased from 3% to 90% within 22 years.
