Israel Harding Hughes, Jr., (d. August 18, 2009) wrote Valle Crucis: A History of an Uncommon Place (1995) and My Valle Crucis: The Thirties (2002). Hughes was born June 5, 1923, in Greensboro, NC, to Israel Harding and Josephine Bowen Hughes. In 1925, his parents built a house, "Tapawingo," in Valle Crucis and the family spent the summers there during the 1930s. After graduation from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in January 1944, Hughes was commissioned an ensign in the Naval Reserve. He served in WWII aboard the destroyer escort U.S.S. Moore. In May, 1946, he retired from active duty. In 1948, he graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, with a Master's in Public Administration. Hughes worked for the cities of Flint, Michigan, Winston-Salem, N.C., and Aiken, S.C., before becoming the city manager in Durham, N.C., a position he held from 1963-1977.
Valle Crucis, North Carolina, is an unincorporated community located in central Watauga County, North Carolina, near the junction of Dutch Creek and Watauga River. Its name is Latin for "Valley of the Cross," because of the shape of the 600 acre Watauga River valley. Valle Crucis is the home of the nineteenth century Episcopal mission and several historic general stores, including the Mast General Store. Hughes' father and grandfather were Episcopal priests with connections to the community, which was established as an Episcopal mission in 1842.
The I. Harding Hughes, Jr., Papers include 46 oral history interviews Hughes conducted from 1983 through 1999, related documents including typed transcriptions of four interviews, and five "due bills," tokens issued by the Valle Crucis Company, Inc., for barter.
Series I, Interviews, 1983-1999, consists of 46 oral history interviews recorded on 41 audiocassettes and one CD listening copy of the interview with Rosa Townsend Green (audiocassette 14). The audiocassettes are arranged alphabetically according to the interviewee's last name and is labeled with a cassette number (1-41). The interview with Rosa Townsend Green has been copied to CD and is available for listening use in the Dougherty Reading Room.
Series II, Related Documents, includes textual materials Hughes collected and created while writing his two books. Subseries A, Biographical Notes on Interviewees, contains Hughes' notes on the individuals he interviewed. Subseries B, Transcripts, contains typed transcriptions of four interviews. Series C, Clippings, contains approximately 30 news clippings and magazine stories about Valle Crucis landmarks, people, and history.
Series III, Valle Crucis Company Due Bills, consists of five due bills, or tokens, and handwritten notes describing their use on two index cards. The Valle Crucis Company, Inc., also known as Farthing's Store, was operated by Richard Aubyn Farthing from 1914 to 1952.
