Rebecca Caudill (1899-1985), also known as Rebecca Ayars, was the author of twenty-four books. She was born in Harlan County, Kentucky. Caudill worked as a teacher in Rio de Janeiro and an editor of a girls' magazine. She and her husband, James Ayars lived in Urbana, Illinois. Her "Bonnie Books" about the Fairchild family include Happy Little Family (1947), Schoolhouse in the Woods (1949), Up and Down the River (1951), and Schoolroom in the Parlor (1959). Other books include Barrie and Daughter (1943), Tree of Freedom (1947), Saturday Cousins (1953), Florence Nightingale (1953), The House of the Fifers (1954), Susan Cornish (1955), Time for Lissa (1959), Higgins and the Great Big Scare (1960), The Best-loved Doll (1962), The Far-Off Land (1964), Pocketful of Cricket (1964), The High Cost of Writing (1965), A Certain Small Shepherd (1965), Did You Carry the Flag Today, Charley? (1966), My Appalachia, a Reminiscence (1966), Come Along! (1969), Someone Go and Bang a Drum (1974), Wind, Sand and Sky (1976), From Hardshell Baptist to Quaker (1979). In 1969, she co-wrote Contrary Jenkins with her husband. Her books have been translated into five languages. In the fall of 1963, the University of Kentucky, Southeast Center honor her with Rebecca Caudill Day. Harlan County's first community library was named in her honor in 1965.
This collection is organized into three series: Correspondence Series, Notes Series, and Manuscript Series. The Manuscript Series contains four drafts of Higgins and the Great Big Scare. All drafts are typescripts. The Correspondence Series consists of Caudill's correspondence to William Eury regarding her manuscript donation. The Notes Series contains four documents which include brainstorming and outlines of Caudill's Higgins and the Great Big Scare.
