Herbert Warren Jeffcoat (October 9, 1859-April 5, 1937) was a Lutheran pastor and served congregations in North Carolina, Georgia and Mississippi. He was born to the Rev. James Osgood Andrew Jacob Turner Jefcoat and Rachel Zadie Jefcoat in Goshen Hill, Alabama. Herbert added an additional 'f' to his surname. His father and both grandfathers were Methodist ministers.
In 1890, Jeffcoat received an A.B. degree from Newberry College. In 1894, he graduated from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary and was ordained in 1894 by the North Carolina Synod of the Lutheran Church.
Jeffcoat married Ella Eve Epting, a Lutheran, from Springfield, South Carolina on April 4, 1879. Ella died in 1894. They had three children: William Cecil, Cora Pearl, and George Holland. Two years after Ella's death, Jeffcoat married Bettie C. Hendrix of Davie County. She died in 1897. He married again in 1899 to Mrs. Rosa Ellen (Fisher) Moose of Cabarrus County, and she also preceded him in death.
Jeffcoat served ten locations over a span of thirty-five years. He organized and built at least two churches, Haven Lutheran, Salisbury, North Carolina and Grace Lutheran, Boone, North Carolina, and conducted mission work for the Lutheran Church in Louisville, Mississippi. Jeffcoat died in Boone, North Carolina. His funeral was held at Grace Lutheran Church, Boone, and he was buried in the St. Mark's Lutheran Church cemetery in Blythewood, South Carolina.
Cora Pearl Jeffcoat (1884-1969) was a parish worker of the Lutheran church, serving in Watauga County, North Carolina and other nearby areas of the Appalachian Mountains. She was born in Springfield, South Carolina on September 30, 1884. In 1923, she began working for the Women's Missionary Society as one of the first Home Missionaries of the Lutheran church. She worked full time until a disabling stroke in 1939 forced her to continue part time until 1954. She helped build churches and visited people over a vast territory, eight settlements in four counties. Before entering church work, Jeffcoat was a school teacher and a district school supervisor in Guilford, Alamance, Davidson, Forsyth, and Cabarrus counties in North Carolina. She graduated from Greensboro College and also studied at Georgia College, Peabody College, Mississippi State College, the University of North Carolina, and Columbia University. Jeffcoat died February 6, 1969 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Her funeral was held at Grace Lutheran Church in Boone, and she was buried in Pine Hill Cemetery, Burlington, North Carolina.
