| Abstract: | John C. Bernhardt Papers is a photocopy of a typewritten transcription of the diary of Major G. W. F. Harper of Caldwell County, North Carolina, and of the North Carolina Volunteers. Although Harper kept diaries from 1841 to 1921, the majority is from 1881 to 1921. Some parts and one separate section were written by his wife Ella Rankin and his sister-in-law Emma Rankin. |

George Washington Finley Harper (1834-1921) was born to James and Caroline Finley Harper at the Fairfield Plantation in Wilkes County. His father James Harper was the founder of Lenoir, North Carolina. G. W. F. Harper graduated from Davidson College. He worked at his father's general merchandise business and as the county register and a justice of the peace. In 1959, he married Ella A. Rankin and they had two children, George Finley and Ellen D. Harper Bernhardt. In 1862, Harper enlisted in Company H, 8th Regiment of the N.C. Infantry as a private. He eventually became a major. After Surrender, Harper rejoined his father at H. Harper and Son. He also became involved in railroad expansion and was active in other business, government and community endeavors.
Emma Rankin and her sister Ella Rankin Harper were the daughters of Reverend Jesse and Ann Delight Salmon Rankin. Rev. Rankin was the first pastor of the Presbyterian congregation in Lenoir, North Carolina. Emma never married and taught at a girls school known as "Kirkwood".
