Rogers Whitener was born in McDowell County, North Carolina in 1919. He graduated from University of Florida with a Masters in English. He served during World War II in the Army Air Force. He and his wife Janice had two daughters. Whitener worked as an English professor at Appalachian State University from 1959 to 1989. He specialized in 18th century literature and Milton. He also assisted the development of the Appalachian Collection. "Folk-Ways and Folk-Speech" appeared weekly in the Watauga Democrat from 1973 to 1991. Whitener encouraged readers to mail in stories to be included in his column.
