Kathryn E. Parke worked as a professor at New York State University College at Cobleskill. She graduated from Smith College in 1936 and was interested in Scandinavian folk schools and attended Ringerike folkehoegskole in Hoenefoss, Norway. She held many offices in the Folk-College Association of America and worked as the editor of its newsletter, Options. Kathryn E. Parke wrote Folk-spirit in modern Irish drama (1936), Norway's folk-high-schools: report of a sabbatical experience (1963), The Folk-College in America: A working-paper for the Folk-College Association of America (1977). She retired to Black Mountain, North Carolina.
Included in this collection are newsletters from various folk-oriented or Appalachian organizations, such as Options, Highlander Reports, and the Appalachian Center of Berea College's News Letter. Other materials include bibliographies of Appalachian Studies books, booklets and documents about folk traditions, and brochures on Berea College. Also included are two letters addressed to Kathryn Parke.
The Kathryn Parke Collection of Papers is organized into five series: Series 190A. John C. Campbell Folk School Series; Series 190B. Highlander Center; Series 190C. Folk-College Association of America; Series 190D. Berea College; Series 190E. Miscellaneous (Appalachian Studies Bibliography and Curriculum, Brochures, Correspondence, Excerpted Articles, Handouts, Souvenir Program). Legal-sized and oversized documents are stored separately.
