With the exception of three items, all materials in this collection are original documents.

Biographical Note

John Waitstel Hodges (1866-1955) was born to Dillard Burton and Eliza Northern Hodges in Granger County, Tennessee. He ran a general store in Boone, North Carolina. He and his wife Martha Caroline "Mattie" Hopkins had several children: Russell Dillard (1897-1962), Nellie E. (1899-~1905), Fred (b. 1902), Eula (b. 1905), Grant (b. 1908), John Waitstel II (1911-1968) and three additional children who died young. His son Russell assisted operating the store.

Collection 192. John W. Hodges Papers. (1827 - 1951)
Land Deeds Series contains original land deeds and land grants for Ashe, Watauga and Wilkes Counties, organized alphabetically by purchaser's surname and date. Many of the deeds are to the Hodges family, particularly John W. Hodges. Land grants from Wilkes County are to Russel Triplett, dating from 1849 to 1855. Some documents are in fragile condition.
Additional Legal Documents Series contains transcriptions and non-land related legal documents, original order. Contains 1902 court petition for guardianship of Bingham children, 1940 contract between John W. Hodges and J.L. Qualls, 1906 boundary of L. H. Michael property, and 1941 agreement between John W. Hodges and G. C. Greene.
Miscellaneous Series contains various documents found in leather wallets, chronologically by location and subject. Included are an undated table cloth draft, correspondence, U.S. Senate Chamber Vistors' Passes, a partially filled Reins-Sturdivant Mutual Burial Association receipt book, tax reciepts for D. B. Hodges and John W. Hodges, map to My Diary North and South, and Hav-A-Tampa cigars advertisements.
