Acquisitions Information

The student paper collection remained in the W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection main stacks for many years without a call number. At least one student paper has been stolen. Appalachian Collection employees Dr. Fred Hay and Dean Williams transferred the student papers from the W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection main stacks to the W.L. Eury Appalachian Closed Collection on 18 August 2000. Carl Ross's widow Charlotte donated 193B. Brinegar Cabin Series in Spring 2003. This collection was opened to the public 20 June 2003.

Biographical Note

Carl Augustus Ross, Jr. (1931-1988) was born in Spring Place, Georgia to Carl and Rosa Smith Ross. He received his Ph.D. from University of Georgia in 1966. He worked as a History professor at Appalachian State University from 1966 to 1988 and the director of the Center for Appalachian Studies from 1984 to 1988. He taught Appalachian History and Latin American courses and researched local and regional history. Ross served as president of the Western North Carolina Historical Association from 1982 to 1984 and from 1987 to 1988 and of the Watauga County Historical Society form 1982 to 1988, on the Board of Directors of the Western North Carolina Historical Association and the North Carolina Society of County and Local Historians, and as editor of Watauga County Times Past from 1985 to 1988 and Appalink. He and his wife Charlotte T. Ross had two children: Clarinda and Tyler.

Collection Overview

The majority of the collection are student papers collected from Ross's Appalachian History students. Additional papers are included. A substantial number of papers are about northwestern North Carolina subjects. Another concentration is of annotated bibliographies. The second series, Brinegar Cabin Materials Series, contains photographs, interviews, information sheets, brochures, and blue prints for the Brinegar Cabin located in Doughton Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Collection Arrangement

This collection is organized into two series: 193A. Student Papers (1978-1982, Spring 1981, 1978-1982, Fall 1984, Fall 1984/Spring 1985/Summer 1985, Spring 1987, Spring 1986-1987); 193B. Brinegar Cabin Materials. Many photographs are glued onto pages. Loose photographs are stored separately.

Architecture Materials Subseries contains research materials regarding the architecture of the Brinegar Cabin of the Blue Ridge Parkway, alphabetical by type. Donor Charlotte Ross does not know the history of these papers. It is possible Carl Ross participated in research for publication; however, no publication is known. This house was moved from its original location to the current one on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Doughton Park. Photographs and 1978 blue prints of the Martin Brinegar house are stored separately.
Family Materials Subseries contains research materials and correspondence regarding the Brinegar's family history, alphabetical by type. Donor Charlotte Ross does not know the history of these papers. Included are several descriptions of the Brinegar family written by genealogist Mrs. Thomas Hory.
