Biographical Note

William Edwin "Bill" Lightfoot (1940 - ) studied folklore at Indiana University in 1976. His dissertation is entitled, "Folklore of the Big Sandy Valley of Eastern Kentucky." He taught folklore at Appalachian State University and was an Appalachian Studies faculty member. He specializes in Lulu Belle and Scotty (Wiseman) history, WSL Barn dance, Etta Baker, and Travis-style guitar picking. Lightfoot retired in 2002.

Collection Overview

The William Lightfoot Papers contains 291 folklore research papers. Students conducted interviews, giving informant and interviewer biographical information. These interviews were used as the springboard for analysis of various folklore topics. Subject matter varies: herb lore, superstitions, family stories, songs, ghost stories, tales predominate. Unique subjects include graffiti, illicit drug lore, hand-tied lace, witchcraft, Swift's Silver Mine, marching band beliefs, cafeteria lore, Greek folklore. Earlier papers includes audiocassettes of the interviews.
