Historical Note

Tomorrow's People Report was compiled by the secretary Mary Kepecs of the National Education Association. This conference was held to discuss education in the Appalachian Region. In the report, she listed the participants and panel presentations as well as wrote minutes and overviews of the conference events. This conference was one of the early meetings which led to the creation of the Appalachian Studies Association.

Collection 207. Tomorrow's People Report. (1970)
Tomorrow's People Report contains the entire 28 page report, Tomorrow's People, written by Mary Kepecs, original order. This report corresponds to the 1970 Conference on Appalachian Studies, sponsored by the Education and Youth Commissions of the Council of the Southern Mountains. This conference was held in Wise, Virginia on 24-25 October 1970 and contained a mixture of academics and activists.
The document contains an overview of the conference, a list of over 100 participants with their addresses and associated organizations, agenda, minutes, list of area lodging and directions, summary of conference proceedings. Included are references to a proposal to the Appalachian Regional Commission for a series of public school and college level Appalachian Studies courses, an overview of the Council of the Southern Mountains' Education Commission activities, and suggestions from the Youth and Research Commissions. One page includes unattributed quotes, some which compare Black Studies to Appalachian Studies, others that focus on education in the Appalachian Region in general.
