Biographical Note

Monroe Thomas was born to Alpheus and Maggie Thomas near Spruce Pine, North Carolina in 1903. Afflicted with several infirmities, Thomas taught himself at home until a teenager. Later, he attended Yancey Collegiate Institute in Burnsville, North Carolina. He worked as an educator in Yancey County until his health further deteriorated. He wrote Public Education in the Mountains: A Crisis and a Challenge and "Frances Silver: Only Woman Ever Legally Hanged in this State." The June, 1958 issue of National Geographic includes an article about Yancey County with information on Thomas.

Container List

Collection 213. Monroe Thomas Collection of Papers. (pre-1957-1984)
Among Thomas' included writings are photocopies of Thomas' handwritten text for Public Education in the Mountains: A Crisis and A Challenge and a typed copy of "Frances Silver: Only Woman Ever Legally Hanged in this State." Thomas argues in Public Education in the Mountains that all schools are in a poor state; however, consolidation of mountain schools has isolated the children and their teachers from their communities to the detriment of children's education. He wrote an article about Frances Silver and gave details about her life, murder and hanging.
Also included is a partial photocopy of the June, 1958 issue of National Geographic, pages 876-880. The author met Thomas prior to his death and discusses Thomas.
C. Robert Jones' play, "The Gentle Giant of Kona: A Story of Monroe Thomas," was shown in 1984 in Burnsville, North Carolina. Susan King Larson directed the play. It was funded by the North Carolina Humanities Committee, the National Endowment for the Humanities, Everett Kivette, and the Yancey Sesquicentennial Committee. It is sponsored by the Toe River Arts Council. A forum followed the play. Participants included Appalachian State University professors Cratis Williams and Carl Ross.
Also included is correspondence between Cratis Williams and Carl Ross and Susan Larson and Carl Ross regarding their preparation for the play's forum. On the back of one letter, dated November 12, 1984, from Susan Larson to Carl Ross are Ross's notes for his segment of the forum.
