Abstract:	The George Antone Papers is the academic papers of former History Department chairperson George Antone. He researched, but did not publish, about western piedmont North Carolina's furniture companies, which lead an ecomonic boom and industrialization during the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries.
	This collection contains eight linear feet of early twentieth century newspaper articles about furniture companies.

Biographical Note

George P. Antone (b. 1935) joined the Appalachian State University History department in 1967 as an Assistant Professor specializing in African American history, race relations, Willis Duke Weatherford (1876-1970), labor, and business history. He studied at Rutgers University (Ed.D., 1962) and Vanderbilt University (M.A., 1967, Ph.D., 1969). In 1969, he served as director of the Institute on the Negro in American History. Antone was appointed to the Advisory Council of the Division of Social Studies for the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. A year later, he received the Danforth Foundation's post graduate Black Studies fellowship. In 1979, Antone became Chair of the History Department at Appalachian and received the College of Arts and Science's only endowed chair, I.G. Greer Distinguished Professorship in History in 1981. He joined the Historical Society of North Carolina in 1984. He was married to Belk Library librarian Allen Antone and raised Alicia and Marc.

Collection Arrangement

This collection is organized into three series: Series 220A. Research (Individuals Subseries, Company Subseries, Research Themes Subseries), Series 220B. Ledger, Series 220C. Publications (Books Subseries, Hickory Chair Chatterbox Subseries, Microfilmed Newspapers Subseries), Series 220D. W.D. Weatherford, and Series 220E. Miscellaneous. Initially, the box list had an item by item listing of newspaper articles; however, due to lack of resources, this was discontinued.

The arrangement is out of order due to Series 220A. Research not filling its box. As a result, Series 220C. Publications was placed before Series 220B. Ledger.
