Historical Note

The Watauga County Historical Society is a historical society for Watauga County, North Carolina. It was organized in 1976 as part of local bicentennial activities. Along with the Appalachian State University History Department, it published the Watauga County Times...past from 1981 to 1992. It became defunct from 1988 to 1992, due to the death of editor Carl A. Ross, who also served as Appalachian State University's Professor of History and director of the Center for Appalachian Studies. After one issue in 1992, Watauga County Times...past was no longer published. During the late 1990s and 2000, citizens attempted to rebuilt the Watauga County Historical Society.
