Title: Collection 224. The William Allan Papers, 1821 - 1953, n.d.
Language of Material: Material in English
Location: For current information on the location of these materials, please consult Appalachian State University.
Abstract:
The William Allan Papers consists of over 500 pedigree files of more than 250 surnames, primarily of northwestern North Carolina families. Wake Forest College's Bowman Grey Medical School personnel, William Allan, C. Nash Herndon and Florence Dudley, conducted a study which interviewed hundreds of Watauga County, North Carolina natives in 1942 to 1953. His purpose was to understand the family structures in order to determine how much intermarriage occurred. Using Bible Records, vital records, interviews, published family histories and newspaper clippings, researchers constructed these pedigrees including birth dates, marriage dates, death dates, and health problems, to illustrate the prevalence of endogamy and genetic diseases.
Extent: 1 linear feet, 34 microfilm reels

Biographical Note

Historical Note

Watauga County, North Carolina is located in the northwestern corner of North Carolina, situated in the Appalachian Mountains. The county was formed from Ashe County, North Carolina in 1849. The ruggedness of the terrain was an obstacle to dense population development. Two major rivers, the Watauga and the New, run through Watauga County. Inhabitants were primarily descendants of Ulster Scot and Germanic ancestry. It historically has had a low African-American population residing in scattered communities throughout the county.

In the 1940s and 1950s, Watauga County was very rural. Appalachian State Teachers College was situated in the county seat of Boone, North Carolina and most residents were either farmers or staff for the college. A century old Episcopal mission, which is currently a retreat center, operated a school in Valle Crucis. In 1943, a hurricane blew through northwestern North Carolina and a major flood destroyed much of the deforested farm land and wiped out the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina "Tweetsie" train line. Several other communities existed in Watauga County. Similar to other rural areas, community lines are not exact. These communities include Bald Mountain Township, Beach Mountain, Beaver Dam, Blowing Rock, Cove Creek, Meat Camp, (Pottertown and Tamarack) Todd, and Valle Crucis.

William Allan (1881-1943) was a professor of medical genetics and founded the first American department of medical genetics at Wake Forest College's Bowman Gray School of Medicine.

Florence C. Dudley was a project field worker, interviewing families and constructing pedigrees. She commuted from Lenoir, North Carolina to Watauga County until she began boarding in Boone. Many pedigrees have dates and locations. Dudley used family histories in the scrapbook of James Swanson of Lenoir, North Carolina, oral histories, Family Bible Records, published family histories, medical records, and court documents. C. Nash Herndon, another field worker and a Professor of Medical Genetics at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest College, assisted the project by conducting interviews with patients and providing names of clients to Florence Dudley, etc.

Collection Overview

The William Allan Papers cover the genealogies of many significant white families from Watauga County, North Carolina. William Allan studied the genetic diseases of Watauga County and other communities. The stereotype of the Appalachian Mountains is that people are inbred; however, the overall study proved that Watauga County families were less inbred than residents of Piedmont North Carolina. Additional materials about other genetic issues are available at Wake Forest University.

Pedigrees and associated genealogical information, such as obituaries, transcribed Bible Records and tombstones, are the primary content. For a key to pedigree symbols, see Bald Mountain Township Series, Box 5, Folder 27. Watauga Survey. Pedigree charts are extensive and occassionally contain the siblings of spouses as well as health problems, dates and references to additional pedigree charts. The use of red pencil demarks those family trees containing intermarriage. For example, one family included a man who married two neices and his sister who married a nephew. Restricted medical records and intellectual tests are included in many folders and have been filmed separately.

Collection Arrangement

This collection is organized into two or three sections: Series 225A. Historical Data; Series 225B. Family Information; Series 225C. Bald Mountain Township; Series 225D. Genetics; Series 225E. Additional Family Information. Original organization is retained. The Family Information Series is alphabetized by the family surname. Within surnames, such as Greene, which has multiple entries, the files are organized by the first name.
