Abstract: The Bernhardt-Harper Papers is a multi-generational family collection of the Bernhardt, Harper, Rankin, and Tate families of Lenoir, North Carolina and Morganton, North Carolina spanning from the settlement of western North Carolina to late twentieth century. These families were instrumental to the development of Caldwell County's economy and education system as well as heavily influencing North Carolina furniture industry.
This collection consists of multiple letters, diaries, photographs, business materials, and land surveys detailing the lives of middle and upper class Piedmont and Appalachian families. It provides insight into the genealogy of Bernhardt, Harper, and associated families, the Bernhardt Furniture Industries, the lumbering industry including the Globe flume, Lenoir, North Carolina history, Blowing Rock, North Carolina history, Green Park Inn, the American Civil War, the Confederacy pride movement, women's lives, Davidson College, Presbyterian church in western North Carolina, and the railroad in northwestern North Carolina.

Biographical Note

Bernhardt Furniture Company. This furniture company was founded by John Matthias Bernhardt in 1889. Lumber business was incorporated in Delaware for tax purposes.

Reverend Jesse Rankin (d. 1876) is the son of John Chambers and Tabitha Wharton Rankin. In 1831, he married his second wife Ann Delight Salmon, who was the daughter of David Douglas and Sarah McKay Salmon. He was a Presbyterian pastor from 1835 to 1837. He served as the first pastor of Lenoir Presbyterian Church from 1869 to 1875. To supplement his income, he coached young men for entrance into the University of North Carolina.

Frances "Fannie" Mebane Rankin Hall is the daughter of Reverend Jesse Rankin and his first wife. She married medical doctor James King Hall of Greensboro, North Carolina. They resided at the family plantation, Cotton Grove. At fourteen, she passed the entrance examinations for the University of North Carolina; however, due to her sex, she was unable to attend. She remained an outspoken supporter of women's rights throughout her life.

Emma L. Rankin (1838-1908) is the daughter of Reverend Jesse and Ann Delight Salmon Rankin. She and her sister Sally were unmarried teachers at Kirkwood School of Lenoir, North Carolina. She was a regular correspondent of family members.

Stella Cloyd (b. 1888) is the daughter of W.H. and Annette Delight Rankin Cloyd and the granddaughter of Rev. Jesse and Ann Delight Salmon Rankin. Her mother was called "Shann" and was the librarian of G.W.F. Harper's Pioneer Library.

Ella Almira Rankin Harper (1836-1909) is the daughter of Reverend Jesse and Ann Delight Salmon Rankin. She was the spouse of George W.F. Harper.

James Harper (1799-1879) is the son of John and Elizabeth Witherow Harper of Scotch descent. Approximately 1827, he left Adams County, Pennsylvania for North Carolina. He and John Waugh started a store at Fort Grider, which later became the Bernhardt-Seagle Company, the oldest hardware store in western North Carolina. In 1833, he married Caroline Ellen Finley, daughter of Samuel and Mary Tate Finley of Augusta County, Virginia. Fairfield in Lenoir, North Carolina was their homestead. He established a chain of stores in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. Civic-minded, Harper donated 30 acres of land, including the public square, to the town of Lenoir. He founded Davenport College and Finley High School, of Lenoir. He was Lenoir Presbyterian Church's first elder and clerk from 1852 to 1879.

Major George Washington Finley Harper (1834-1921) is the son of James Harper and Caroline Finley Harper. He attended Davidson College. In 1859, he married Ella Almira Rankin, the daughter of Reverend Jesse and Ann Delight Salmon Rankin. They resided in Sweetbriar and raised two children, George Finley Harper and Ellen Douglas Harper. He served as a major in Confederate Army. As postmaster of Lenoir, he carved the design of a prepayment stamp in a block of holly wood on September 19, 1861 and had 500 copies printed. Fewer than 30 of these stamps are known today. He founded the Bank of Lenoir and the Pioneer Library. He was elected elder of Lenoir Presbyterian Church deacon in 1868 and in 1891.

Ellen Douglas Harper Bernhardt (1866-1944?) is the daughter of George W.F. and Ella Almira Rankin Harper. She was the spouse of John Matthias Bernhardt.

John Christian Bernhardt (1786-1854) was born on Bear Creek, of current Stanly County, North Carolina. He was the son of John Matthias and Anna Margaret Bushardt Bernhardt, spouse of Elizabeth Lentz (1796-1848). He was a farmer and partner in Barnhardt Gold Mine, Gold Hill, North Carolina in 1843. He was a member of the House of Representatives from Cabarrus in 1825, 1826, 1827, 1828, and 1830. He was buried in the Bethel Church, now Bear Creek Church.

Matthias Alexander Bernhardt (1818-1877) is the son of John Christian and Elizabeth Lentz Bernhardt. He married Barbara Susan Ramsaur. He was the deacon of the Lenoir Presbyterian Church from 1863 to 1877.

John Matthias Bernhardt (1860-1935) is the son of Matthias Alexander and Barbara Ramsaur Bernhardt. He was nicknamed "Tice." He graduated from Davidson College in 1886. He worked as a surveyor in Oregon briefly before founding the Bernhardt Furniture Company in 1889. He also owned lumber companies. In 1894, he married Ellen Douglas Harper, daughter of G.W.F. and Ella Almira Rankin Harper. Children include John Christian, George "Linn," James Douglas and Del (Mrs. T. Henry) Wilson.

George "Linn" Bernhardt (1858-1912) is the son of Matthias Alexander Bernhard and Barbara Ramsaur. He was the father of Matthias, Richmond, George and John Seagle.

John Christian Bernhardt, Sr. (1906-2003) is the son of John Matthias and Ellen Harper Bernhardt. His wife was Jean Thornwell Alexander of Morganton, North Carolina. He graduated from Davidson College in 1927. In 1933, he built his residence, "Homeplace," on Harper-Bernhardt family land. He was president and chairman of the board of Bernhardt Industries, director of First Union National Bank, Spainhour Furniture Co., and Wilbern Investment Co. He also was former director of Southern Furniture Manufacturing Association, former chairman of the Sweetbriar Realty Co., former member of the Board of Governors, American Furniture Mart. In 1969, he received the L.A. Dysart Citizenship Award for Outstanding Community Service and named Man of the Year by the Lenoir Chamber of Commerce. In 1974, he received the Davidson College Alumni Service Medal, and in 1978 the Distinguished Alumnus Award. He was an elder and chairman of the board of deacons in the First Presbyterian Church.

Jean Thornwell Alexander Bernhardt (1908-1994) is the daughter of Edgar Davis and Nancy Thornwell Pearson Alexander, of Morganton, North Carolina. She graduated from Agnes Scott College in 1930 or 1931. She married John Christian Bernhardt Sr. in 1931. They had three children, Nancy Thornwell Bernhardt Collett, John Christian Jr., George Alexander "Alex." A lifelong lover of words, she wrote poetry and short stories. In 1993, she published Murder at the Royal Oak.

The Tate Family is connected to the Bernhardt family through John Christian Bernhardt's wife Jean Thornwell Alexander Bernhardt. They resided in Burke County, North Carolina.

These papers were originally held by George Linn Bernhardt and Ellen Harper Bernhardt. G.W.F. Harper, Ellen Harper Bernhardt, and John Christian Bernhardt, Sr. wrote notes on documents explaining the family documents and attached them to the document packets. John C. Bernhardt, Sr.'s children share ownership.

Newspaper Series. (1773 - 1993, n.d.)
The Newspaper Series includes the Bernhardt family newspapers as collected over two hundred years. The Lantern is a handwritten newspaper written by Ellen Harper during her youth. Smithfield Pine Knot is a handwritten newspaper written by one of Harper's friends. Neighborhood News include the childhood newsletters that John Christian Jr. and Alex Bernhardt wrote, with much assistance from their mother Jean Bernhardt. Many newspaper clippings are related to the Harper and Bernhardt families. Other series also include newspaper clippings.

The Emma Rankin Series consists of multiple letters from Emma Lydia Rankin. During the Civil War, she befriended Colonel and Mrs. Palmer and regularly described them in letters to her sister Ella Harper. Evidently, the Palmers were considered "Yankees" by Lenoir residents.

James Harper Series. (1839-1874, n.d.)
Correspondence Subseries consists of three folders of letters, primarily to his son and from business associates. Samuel Finley was a relative of Harper's wife Caroline. Common correspondents include William P. Waugh, H.N. Pharr, John Horner, and Jonathan Waugh.
The Business Subseries consists of apprentice bonds, job contracts, debt contracts, 1839 Waugh and Harper stock listings, promissory notes, purchases with costs, receipt for subscription of The Presbyterian. Some documents relate to Waugh and Harper. Some documents are incomplete.
The Miscellaneous Subseries contains materials of which provenance is unclear or personal. One letter possibly from Harper. A 1864 letter requesting a male slave to work in Weldon's fortification was attached to a trick game. Also included are Harper's 1861 letter of appointment to postmaster, a fragment of a drawing of a dog, and an undated letter from Phoebe Patterson to her cousin Caroline Finley Harper.
The Ledger Subseries consists of a 1857 Memorandum Book. This 3 1/2" x 5" book contains dry goods stock with some corresponding prices and notes.

The Mary E. Harper Series contains a blue 1850 flier for Lenoir, North Carolina's Montrose Academy, a female boarding academy or finishing school. It lists students and their homes, names of instructors, course offerings and prices and regulations.

George Finley Harper Series. (1874 - 1894, n.d.)
The George Finley Harper Series consists of one folder of letters, mostly to relatives while a student at Davidson College. It contains a letter to John M. Bernhardt about Bernhardt's thoughts on entering Davidson College and a 1891 letter to John Cunningham regarding his marriage proposal to Cunningham's daughter, Harper's note giving John M. Bernhardt permission to be his stockholder proxy.

George Washington Finley Harper Series. (1847 - 1922, n.d.)
Correspondence Subseries consists of letters to and from G.W.F. Harper. G.W.F. Harper wrote a large portion of letters to his wife Ella while serving as a major in the Fifty-Eighth Regiment (Infantry) of the Confederate Army. Many letters were from family members and business associates. Some letters contain notations written by G.W.F. Harper at a later date; others contain notes from descendants John Christian Bernhardt and Nancy Bernhardt Collett.
Correspondents include Archy, "cousin Lee," his sister Ella Virginia "Nell" Hull, Josie Grey, Chas Hickerson, J. George Finley, L.A. Winslow, cousin Cornelia, his mother, James Harper, Henry H. Banks, John H. Williams, Jesse Rankin, H. Clay Pilson, and Joseph King. Many acquaintances complained that Harper was an infrequent correspondent.
Ledger Subseries contains mostly business account books. One notebook contains account of the hospitalization and death of Barbara Ramsaur Bernhardt, 12 December 1878. In it, G.W.F. Harper describes her health problems (sudden chest pains, shortness of breath, and diarrhea) and doctors' cures (quinine, bromide, and "being tapped").
Book Subseries contains the Pioneer Library's 1884 bound copy of The Daily Evening Lenoir Topic, Voices of the Civil War - Atlanta. Voices of the Civil War - Atlanta included a diary excerpt that was attributed to G.W.F. Harper and which John Christian Bernhardt said was not part of the diary.
Civil War Subseries contains reminiscences about the Civil War by various individuals. Many documents are handwritten letters and memoirs. Also included are modern documents related to Major G.W.F. Harper. Gilbert and Co.'s "Directory of the General Assembly of North Carolina for the Session Commencing November 17, 1862" is a 24" x 18.5" seating map with the boarding house names of North Carolina's Members of the Senate and House of Commons.
Miscellaneous Subseries contains various materials related to the Harpers' business and personal lives. Of particular interest are the receipts for Harper's wedding suit and his marriage certificate.

Ellen Harper Bernhardt Series. (1872 - 1944, n.d.)
Correspondence Subseries consists of letters to and from Ellen Douglas Harper Bernhardt. Also, see Newspaper Series. As a young woman, Ellen Harper wrote a neighborhood newspaper that she shared with friends.
Financial Book Subseries contains copies of check receipts and monthly financial statements from the World War II era.
Diary Subseries contains eight diaries, primarily dating from Ellen's teenaged years and her later years.
Also included is the 1926 Cradle Roll for the Lenoir Presbyterian Church. This lists all the children's names and birthdates within the church. It also lists the names of children promoted from 1926 to 1929.
Scrapbook Subseries contains two scrapbooks by Ellen Bernhardt. One is about Ellen herself, listing a variety of details about her life such as her first steps as a child. Also, see Photograph Series. Ellen Bernhardt created many of the photograph albums.

George Linn Bernhardt Series. (1874 - 1899, n.d.)
The Correspondence Suberies consists of letters to and from George Linn Bernhardt. Many of his letters are written to his brother John Matthias and to Ellen Harper, who later became his sister-in-law. These letters include details about the business as well as more personal letters about Ellen's "troubles." His earliest correspondents include his cousin Emma and Arthur Ramseur.
Education Subseries consists of five of Linn Bernhardt's grade reports from Finley High School dated 1874 to 1875.
Medical Subseries contains George Bernhardt's line-by-line account from Richard Baker Hospital, dated August 4, 1928. Bernhardt stayed in the hospital for almost two months after an operation.
