Historical Note

Kawana is a community in Avery County, North Carolina near Simmons and Persimmon Ridges. Surnames of community members include Bowman, Setzer, Woody, Clark(e), Eastman, and Hice. The community contained a railroad, three grist mills, and cemeteries.

Collection Overview

The 1838-1900 map has a scale of 1:24,000 and the 1900-1925 map's scale is 1:9,600. The later map key contains locations of gravestones, houses, orchards, stores, churches, cemeteries, post offices, and barns.
