Biographical Note

Samuel Ferd Horton, son of David and Susan Horton of Sugar Grove, was born ~1895. He lived in Vilas. He attended Appalachian Training School (1912-1916) and Wake Forest College (1916-1917). He married Pearle Fuller in 1926 and had three children. He entered military service in 1918 and was stationed in Brest, France. He received a high school principal certificate by state-wide examination and received a law license in 1925. He worked at Walnut Grove School, as a principal at Union High School in Greenville, West Virginia, Wilkes County's Millers Creek High School, Oak Hill High School principal in the 1920s, and was principal of Cove Creek High School for 33 years. From 1942 to 1945, he served as Watauga County School superintendent while Howard Walker served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

The 1917 and 1918 handwritten diaries are photocopied on the same pages. The 1917 diary contains favorite quotations and major world events as well as Watauga County deaths in 1918 and 1919. Diary entries are brief daily descriptions about Horton's experiences in Brest, France. The 1918 diary runs from April 1918 to 1918. The entries also provide information about his courtship with Ethel and Appalachian Training School experiences.
