Historical Note

Chartered in 1827, Baltimore and Ohio Railway was one of the first large scale railroads built and merged into Chesapeake and Ohio in 1964. It was started in Baltimore to compete with the canal freight traffic. In the early 1830s, the railway experimented with steam/coal power and carriage designs through competitions. It reached the Ohio River in 1853.

For more information, please see the W.L. Eury Appalachian Collections' Brief history of several rail companies active in Appalachia .
