Biographical Note

Sergeant-Major John Champe was born in Loudoun County, Virginia. During the Revolutionary War,, he served George Washington as a spy against Benedict Arnold. Pretending to desert from the Continental armies, he helped undercover that Arnold was a traitor, saved the life of Andre, and established the innocence of General Gates.

Collection Overview

These prints are believed to date to approximately 1850. "Sergeant Champe" was drawn by J.L. Morton and is 3 1/4" by 5 3/4". It illustrates a man with a horse in water with men firing firearms from boats. "The Desertion of Sergeant Champe" is by J.G. Chapman for the Columbian Magazine. It is 4 1/2" by 5 1/2" and shows a man on horseback.
