Historical Note

May Stone and Katherine Pettit founded Hindman Settlement School in 1902 at the forks of Troublesome Creek in Knott County, Kentucky. Modeled after urban settlement houses like Jane Addam’s Hull House, Hindman Settlement School acted as a center for education, health care and social services. With the shift to public schools and local service agencies, the school altered its mission to provide programs for children with learning differences and an Adult Education Program to teach adults learn to read and/or receive a General Equivalency Diploma.

Founded in 1977, the Appalachian Writers Workshop is Hindman's annual workshop which supports emerging regional writers. It offers a weeklong workshop with seminars and one-on-one conferences.

Jack Higgs has written and edited a dozen books including God in the Stadium: Sports and Religion in America (a Pulitzer Prize nominee) and Appalachia Inside Out. He taught courses in Appalchian, Southern and American literature for 27 years.
