Historical Note

Harper's Ferry is located in Jefferson County, West Virginia where the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers meet. The states of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia also join at the border of Jefferson County. It is best known for John Brown's 1859 raid to initiate a slave revolt. It was chartered in 1763 having been used as a ferry by Robert Harper. In 1833, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal reached Harpers Ferry linking it with Washington, D.C. The following year, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad began train service through Harpers Ferry.

The picture is attributed to W.E. Dittmeyer, pharmacist. It is handcolored and labels townships, rivers, and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad bridge.
