Benjamin Crouse (1830-1864) was born in Ashe County (present-day Alleghany), North Carolina and lived as a farmer. His wife was named Minta. Their children may have included Nancy, Elizabeth, Martin, James, Peggy, and Joshua. Crouse served in Company I, 61st Regiment North Carolina Infantry the "Alleghany Rangers." This company was raised on 3 May 1862. It was mustered at Camp Vance as Capt. Aras Bishop Cox's Independent Company, N.C. Partisan Rangers and redesignated as Company I in November 1862. In May and June 1863, Crouse was on detail to arrest deserters and conscripts. In August 1863, he was wounded in the face on Morris Island, Charleston Harbor, South Carolina and remained in the hospital to recover. He returned to duty by September 1863. He was killed at Fort Harrison, Virginia on 30 September 1864.
William T. Choate, born in Ashe County in 1832, served as this company as 2nd Lieutenant, 1st Lieutenant, and captain. He furloughed in August 1863 and evidently carried a letter and presents between the Crouses. He was killed at Cold Harbor, Virginia on 2 June 1864.
