Biographical Note

John William Florin earned his B.A. in History and Geography from the University of Kansas in 1964 and a M.A. (1966) and Ph.D. (1971) in Geography from Pennsylvania State University. He joined the Geography Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1969. His teaching and research interests focus on United States historical and cultural geography, population, and medical geography. In 1987, he became the department chair and, in 1994, the Executive Director of UNC-CH's Office of Study Abroad.

Florin's publications include Death in New England: Regional Variations in Mortality (1971), The Changing Population of the Southeast (1973), Medical Geography (1988) with Melinda Meade and Wilbert Gesler, Regional Landscapes of the United States and Canada (1992) with Steve Birdsall, Geographic Methods of Health Services Research (1994), and Atlas of American Agriculture: The American Cornucopia (1995) with Richard Pillsbury.

This is a twenty-two page document explaining the relevance of John Florin's proposed study of the mid-Twentieth Century decline of midwifery in Ashe, Avery, Madison, Mitchell, Watauga, and Yancey Counties, North Carolina. Florin was an Associate Professor of Geography at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was possibly applying for a National Science Foundation grant. It was not funded.
