Historical Note

Concordia College was founded in 1877 in Conover, Catawba County, North Carolina. It began as Concord High School and chartered as a college in 1881. Originally under the care of the Tennessee Synod of the Lutheran Church until 1891, the school became the center of a dispute. Local ministers wished to open a new institution in Hickory, North Carolina. This new institution became Lenoir-Rhyne College. There were also some denominational schisms at work. In Fall 1892, it came under the care of the Missouri Synod. A fire burned the college in 1935, and the Synod decided not to rebuild.
