In the late 1920s and the 1930s, James Eubert Holshouser, Sr. and W.E. Comer were lawyers in Boone, North Carolina while Eugene Trivette was a lawyer in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. In 1960, Holshouser and his son, James Eubert Holshouser, Jr., formed the law firm Holshouser and Holshouser. Holshouser, Jr. served as North Carolina's Republican governor from 1973 to 1977. Holsouser, Sr. became an U. S. District Attorney and a district court judge.
This collection consists of two lawyer's desk books from the Depression era Boone, North Carolina. Based on a handwritten description within the inside cover of the 1929 book and the letter head found within the 1932 book, the books are believed to have been used by two law firms Trivette and Comer (1929) and Trivette and Holshouser (1932). The books record payments received, trips taken, and court actions taken.
Mentioned are a Mr. Potter (March 18, 1929), Appalachian State Teachers College, and various leading families in Boone, North Carolina.
The lawyer's desk books were produced by Wachovia Bank and Trust Company. Loose papers found within the desk books are housed separately. Each item from 1929 is identified by the date it was attached to within the desk book. The loose materials from 1932 were loose at the beginning.
