North Carolina poet Jonathan Chamberlain Williams (1929-2008) was tied to the experimental liberal arts Black Mountain College and its school of writing, sometimes referred to as the Beat movement's East Coast wing. Born in Asheville, he was raised in Washington, D.C. and Macon Counties. He studied at Princeton and Chicago's Institute of Design before enrolling in Black Mountain College in 1951. That same year, he founded Jargon Press, which published over 100 books including Sherwood Anderson, Charles Olson, and Harry Callaghan. A poet himself, Williams' best poetry are in his Blues & Roots/Rue &Bluets (1985) and Jubilant Thicket. In the 1950s he also became involved in photography which are featured in his books, Portrait Photographs (1979) and A Palpable Elysium: Portraits of Genius and Solitude (2002). His essays are collected in The Magpie's Bagpipe (1982) and Blackbird Dust (2000).
