Biographical Note

Ed Broyhill was born in Lenoir, North Carolina to James Thomas and Louise Robbins Broyhill. His grandfather James Edgar Broyhill (1892 - 1988) built a Lenoir-based furniture company and was involved in the Republican Party of North Carolina. His father James Broyhill represented the Fifth Congressional District from 1963 to 1986. Ed was raised in Washington, D.C. while his father served as U.S. Representative. He graduated from Wake Forest University in 1976 and 1978. He was the CEO of Edgar B Catalog Furniture. He married Melanie Pennell, and they raised three children, Elizabeth, James, and Penn.

Broyhill ran for the Fifth Congressional District of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2004. He came in third in the heated Republican primary election against Vernon Robinson, Virginia Foxx, State Senator Jay Helvey, Nathan Tabor, Joseph H. Byrd, Edward L. Powell, and David Stephen Vanhoy. Because none of the candidates received 40%, the top two vote recipients, Vernon Robinson and Virginia Foxx, had a July Primary in which Foxx won. In turn, she won the November election.
