The Appalachian Region

Map of the Appalachian RegionWhile the Appalachian Collection's focus is primarily on the Southern uplands, materials are also collected on the entire Appalachian Region. The Federal Government defines the Appalachian Region as "a 200,000-square-mile region that follows the spine of the Appalachian Mountains from southern New York to northern Mississippi. It includes all of West Virginia and parts of twelve other states: Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia." The map on the right appears courtesy of the Appalachian Regional Commission.

For more information on the counties, populations, and industries in the Region, please see the Appalachian Regional Commission Web site.

The maps linked below appear courtesy of Dr. David E. Whisnant,

This link shows the many Appalachian Region Borders that have been drawn by various groups and individuals over the years.

Below are links to maps of the states bordering the Appalachian region. Each map shows counties that either border or comprise the Appalachian region of that state.
