Domesday Collection

Housed in Special Collections, the Domesday Collection was donated by Carl Jackson and consists of the materials he used for his thesis, Determination of manorial value in 1086 Essex County, England (M.A.in History -- Appalachian State University, 1989). Mr. Jackson now resides in Winter Haven, FL, where he is a citrus grower.

The collection contains 131 titles on the Domesday Book , its place in history, and the time period (late 11th century) during which it was compiled. The Collection also contains volume 32 of a translation of the original text . Volume 24 of that same translation can be found in the ASU Main Stacks. A complete set of the translation is available through ABC Express.

The Domesday Book itself is a survey of the lands of England carried out by order of William I, the Conqueror in 1085-1086. Known at the time as the "Survey of the Lands of England," by the 12th century it was referred to as the "Domesday" because there was no appeal on any matter in which it was used.
