Bookmarklets

A bookmarklet is a piece of javascript code that enables you to extend the capabilites of your web browser. To add a bookmarklet to your browser, you simply add it to your bookmarks or Favorites list in Internet Explorer or Firefox. You can do this by right-clicking on the link and selecting either "Add to Favorites" or "Bookmark this Link." Even easier is to simply click and drag the bookmarklet to your bookmarks toolbar, if you use it.

Here are some bookmarklets that might be useful for ASU students and faculty. To use the bookmarklets, simply highlight on the web page you are reading the word or phrase which you wish to search for, then click the bookmark and it will search the resource for the highlighted words. If you do not highlight anything, the bookmarklet will bring up a box in which you can enter your search terms.

Proxifyer

The Proxifyer bookmarklet will take a URL and turn it into a proxied version, so that off-campus students can use the URL to link to ASU resources. You use it in the same way you use other bookmarklets, by highlighting a URL on a webpage and clicking the bookmarklet. If you do not highlight a URL, then a pop-up box will ask you for one. After you click the bookmarklet, a popup window will display the proxified URL.

This new and improved version allows you to type in the letters "db " and a part of the database name and it will present you with all the matches and the appropriate links for that database. For instance, typing in "db cinahl" will bring up one match to the CINAHL database, while "db abi" will bring up about six matches to various databases. You can then cut and paste the link you need.

For links to specific articles and e-books, you should use the highlight or cut and paste method.

For links to a database, use the "db ..." method.
