Examples of Literature Integrated into the Curriculum
Owl Moon , by Jane Yolen. E Y54ow (a child & parent take a winter's night walk to look for owls)
Science & Reading Connections: students research information about owls in information books, encyclopedias, & the web; take nature walks to bird watch using a field guide to birds; lead into a unit on the seasons.
Math Connections: students measure their arm spans & compare to owl wing span; chart comparison findings.
Writing Connections: students keep journals of birds seen on nature walk & information learned.
Social Studies & Language Development Connections: students tell stories about something they did with their families/a family member that was fun, interesting, educational, or memorable in some way.

Science & Reading Connections: prepare different animal tracks on the floor or use books containing pictures of animal tracks; students study different animal tracks; students draw their own tracks & compare to the animal tracks; lead into a unit on weather and snow as a weather phenomenon.
Reading & Social Studies Connections: read the book "Snowflake Bentley" by Jacqueline Martin, & discuss his research with a camera to discover that no two flakes are alike.
Art Connections: students experiment with folding & cutting paper snowflakes; make collage pictures of favorite or imagined snow scenes using torn paper.

Math Connections: let students brainstorm unusual units of measurement and choose which units they will use to measure an item; introduce graphing by having students measure different items using the same unit of measurement and/or measure the same item using different units of measurement, then compare results on graphs.
