Jewel Davis has completed her presidency of the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents of NCTE (ALAN), a division of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Jewel has served in numerous leadership positions in ALAN. While president, Jewel designed and organized a two-day workshop promoting the value of youth literature in the classroom. Over 500 educators, librarians, and youth advocates attended the workshop held in Columbus, Ohio The workshop included 30 panels featuring over 70 young adult and middle grade authors and breakout sessions focused on adolescent literature research and pedagogy. Jewel worked with 26 publishing companies to book authors and trained 30 educators to moderate author panels. 16 teenagers from Columbus, OH area high schools also participated by moderating panels and meeting authors.
Jewel said, "What a year it has been leading an organization devoted to empowering youth through affirming literature. Now more than ever, we need to highlight authors who are writing about the very real and diverse experiences of our youth. Thank you to all my ALAN friends for showing up to encourage and center the audacious dreams of youth."
