EndNote Glossary

Connection Files

Connection Files are used to store the information necessary to connect to and search online databases.

Field

A field refers to a part of an EndNote reference, such as the author, year, or title. EndNote allows for up to 40 fields in each reference.

Filter

A filter is a file consisting of templatesthat control how EndNote interprets and imports data into an EndNote library.

Library

A "library" is the term for your EndNote database of references.

Output Style

An output style is a file that controls the output format of in-text citations, references in a bibliography, figures, and tables.

Reference Types

EndNote designates references from a variety of different sources, such as books, journal articles, and newspaper articles as reference types.
