English 1000 Library Assignments

You may want to request an instructional session for your class to familiarize students with research techniques and sources. Early scheduling can guarantee that a librarian and library facilities will be available to fit your specific course needs. Remember to allow for students' inexperience and for the availability of materials. Librarians at Belk Library will be happy to answer any questions you may have when designing assignments for your students. Library instruction classes may be requested by filling out the Library Instruction Request form: http://www.library.appstate.edu/reference/instruction_request/

We encourage you to ask your students to complete the quiz at the end of the Library Research Tutorial before coming to their library session. There is a link to the tutorial from the Research page under How Do I? Cite Sources. If your students have attended Freshman Seminar, they were required to complete the tutorial and the quiz. If they cannot answer the questions, they will be prompted to go to the appropriate part of the tutorial to find the correct answers. Students must score a minimum of 70% in order for the certificate to print.

Contrary to popular opinion, the expertise and experience of our students in regard to libraries and electronic research varies substantially, and the information environment changes rapidly, so it is helpful to have them familiar with the basics before they come to the library. Even students who have attended a previous library orientation may not have received information relevant to the needs of your current assignment.
